An ode to the potato

Yesterday evening I snaffled a new potato off my brother's dinner plate. He shooed me away, but let me away with taking a small one.  The moment I ate it I wished I'd taken another couple. I'd forgotten how delightful it is to eat a new potato. Light, fluffy, almost citrusy.

I spent too many years in countries where potatoes are sold as "white" or "yellow". I fell out of love with potatoes. Then I came back to Ireland. Even the worst of potatoes in Ireland is better than the giant "white" and "yellow" potatoes. But even with that I had forgotten the glory that is a new potato until I had the Kerr's Pink yesterday.

So tonight my dinner was a bit of fish and potatoes (Arran Victory and Kerr's Pink). Boiled. With a little butter and salt. The small ones I just ate, skin and all. And tomorrow, I might have potatoes again. The next day too because I'll be back in "yellow" and "white" potato land again soon.

Friday Feature: Street Art

When all around is a canvas. Community art, art in the community!

Terrible photo, photography is not my forte but I hope it doesn't completely detract from giving an idea of Dublin Canvas, which is working towards "Colour in the City".

These little bits of art, which are one of my favourite things in Dublin, pop up unexpectedly, and brighten up the day no end. The Dublin Canvas website describes Dublin Canvas as,
an idea, a community art project intended to bring flashes of colour and creativity to everyday objects in the City. Less grey, more play. The project takes previously unused public space and transforms it into canvases to help brighten up the City. Making Dublin a more beautiful place to live, work and visit.
It's worth heading over to Lovin Dublin as they've collated some great shots of last summer's additions. Dublin Canvas also has a handy map view of where to find the artwork. Maybe I'll start a new project and try to see all the pieces!

Grow your own diamonds

Much more exciting than other "grow your own" - sparkly flowers in the garden. Secret ingredients: Irish rain and sunshine.
